GUITARCHESTRA is an inter-generational electric guitar ensemble that will engage amateur and semi-professional guitarists of all ages and abilities in the creation of an immersive multi-phonic, sound work. Led by composer Matthew Timmis the project builds on his ongoing exploration of complex cumulative musical structures and sound relationships composed from simple individual parts for large community ensembles. The project draws on popular culture’s obsession with the electric guitar and explores the relationship between the performer and audience through an inclusive process and concert outcome.
GUITARCHESTRA will generate an unprecedented opportunity for a range of individuals (with a special focus on young people) to participate in the creation and performance of new experimental music. By drawing on the interests, skills and resources already in the community of Port Adelaide / Enfield and greater Adelaide and beyond, GUITARCHESTRA will unite individual players of all ages and musical tastes to create something that wouldn’t ordinarily happen – giving them and the greater public access to a kind of music they might not have previously experienced.
NB: This project was invited to be part of the 2020 Adelaide Guitar Festival, that due to COVID19 has been cancelled. Plans are underway for its presentation at Harts Mill in 2021 as part of the 2021 festival. Matthew is currently writing the score.
This project is co-funded by the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
